What is Ayurveda about?

Ayur – meaning life, veda – meaning knowledge or science. An ancient science of life and its forces, resources and longevity. Ayurveda is based on a deep union with the very essence of life. It is a truly holistic medicine. It treats the human being as a whole: body, mind and spirit. It is not an anachronistic type of folk medicine. It is a fully-fledged science, with its own measurable, extremely complex and comprehensive methods for restoring the balance of the organism – the health of the human being. It operates on the basis of observations of living beings and their actual reactions to the environment, not just on laboratory experiments. It is a philosophical concept which claims that the state of the human body and mind as an individual depends on its conforming to the surrounding nature and the cosmos as a whole. It is a way of living, learning how to cooperate with nature and live in harmony with it so as to maintain physical and mental health.

Why ayurveda?

The answer is – to survive and live in health and happiness for many years.

Academic (Western) medicine focuses on identifying external pathogens and controlling disease from outside. Ayurveda, on the other hand, focuses on the living being and controlling disease by balancing a person’s internal life force. Today, as restrictions on the use of antibiotics become evident in the face of widespread weakening of the immune system and the resurgence of infectious diseases deemed to be under control, the principles of a proper lifestyle that boosts internal energy and the immune system are crucial to the health of humans as a species and our survival for decades to come.
